Building Commissioning Workshop
Technical and Interactive
Building Commissioning Workshop
Tuesday and Wednesday, October 23/24
8 AM – 5 PM
Fred Hutchison Cancer Research Center
Workshop Description
This Building Commissioning Technical Workshop will use the Existing Building Commissioning (EBCx) process as a mechanism to introduce and work with the technical skill set used by commissioning providers in virtually every commissioning process from New Construction Commissioning (NCx) to EBCx to Ongoing Commissioning.
The class will begin with an overview of the EBCx and NCx processes to establish a general level of understanding of the goals of a building commissioning process and thus, the framework for the rest of the class. It will then provide an overview of the technical skills used by most commissioning providers as they work on facilities.
At that point, the class will move to interactive exercises that will use a combination of three dimensional SketchUp models and field activities to expose the attendees to the application of the commissioning skill set. After working with a very simple SketchUp model with the instructor to get up to speed on using SketchUp, the instructors will lead attendees, working as teams, through scoping a virtual chilled water plant, and virtual air handling system, and a virtual condenser water system using the SketchUp models.
The model-based exercises will be supplemented with field activities in the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center mechanical spaces to reinforce and practice some of the skills the attendees have been exposed to by working with the models. Subsequently, the instructors will work interactively with the students using trend data, spreadsheets and other tools to develop selected findings in the models.
The finding development session will explore what needs to be done to investigate, implement, and verify common commissioning findings While the exercises will be specific to the opportunities observed in the models, the techniques and concepts explored will be broad-based and applicable to virtually any commissioning process.

Instructor David Sellers, Facility Dynamics
As a gifted educator and speaker, David Sellers, PE has secured his niche in the commissioning community as a leader in commissioning and controls design by making the holistic commissioning process an imperative element of a successfully run building. He leads many of our seminars on controls design offering over 40 years of hands-on experience to a growing number of operators who are best trying to understand and operate buildings while meeting the goals of improved comfort, seamless operation, and at times, energy and financial savings. A testament to his commitment to the commissioning community is his multiple sessions at the National Conference on Building Commissioning, the on-site development and training work associated with the Marriott Advanced Engineering Program, and multiple Pacific Energy Center workshops. In 2017, David was the recipient of the Benner Award which recognized outstanding performance in ensuring that commissioning is seen as “business as usual” in the commercial building industry.
Facility Dynamics Engineering specializes in providing optimal building performance to facilities and their control systems through the commissioning process. For nearly 30 years ago, our team has demonstrated that a building can operate the way it was designed to or with certain measures, even better than its intended design. With numerous repeat clients and a portfolio of over 4,000 projects, our team of engineers is comprised of former owners, superintendents, and facility managers allowing our owner-focused approach to successfully lead every project with a unique understanding of all involved stakeholders.
Course will provide 16-hours of self-reported CEUs

SBC welcomes voltage optimization company, Legend Power
We’re Legend Power® Solutions Inc. and we’re really pleased to be up and running in the Smart Buildings Center! As we ramp up our presence in Seattle, we couldn’t think of more aligned organizations than NEEC and the SBC. We now have a presence in the Tool Lending Library (you can now borrow our proprietary Voltage Loggers to easily measure real time voltage in your building) and you can check out our interactive map of the scope of overvoltage across Seattle on SBC’s Smart Board.
Legend manufactures the SmartGATE™; an innovative energy conservation and management platform for high-performance buildings. We reduce your building’s energy usage by 3-5% and reduce the impact grid volatility has on your building.
After an initial meeting, a usual first step is to do a voltage profile of the building using our Voltage Logger, which you can borrow for free from SBC’s Tool Lending Library. It lets you see voltage. It simply plugs into a wall socket and records detailed voltage levels in the building. We recommend approximately 2 weeks of data. We download the data from the on-board SD card, from which we then provide the voltage profile for the period.
Curious about your building? Or a client’s building? Check for yourself if your building is over or under voltage, and what you could potentially be saving on energy. SmartGATE™ also improves your building’s resiliency by minimizing downtime due to voltage issues. We combined voltage readings from around town with publicly available Seattle City Light data to create our interactive map of overvoltage, and projected usage and savings. Check it out here: https://legendpower.com/markets/#Seattle, or at the Smart Buildings Center.
We don’t know your issues yet, so we don’t know if SmartGATE™ is a solution for you. But we do know that with almost 300 installed, 74% of our customers have purchased between 2 and 18 systems. They install SmartGATE™, it works, and they install more. We couldn’t put it better than our customer Spencer Wood, Director of Facilities Management at Humber College:
“It’s not like when you change a light… you just save on the light. You change this… you save on everything!”
Certified Energy Manager Training & Certification Opportunity
The local AEE Columbia River Chapter will be hosting the Certified Energy Manager (CEM) training and certification in downtown Portland October 28th – November 1st. The five-day training seminar provides an in-depth, comprehensive learning and problem-solving forum through examining the fundamentals within key areas of energy management. Participants learn, system by system, how to diagnose and analyze energy savings opportunities. The CEM certification exam will be proctored on the final day of the training. If you’re interested in participating, you can learn more here: https://lnkd.in/gmuXjjN
One week until the next Why Smart Buildings event – don’t forget to register!
This is your last chance to register for the ‘Why Smart Buildings? Creating a Compelling Business Case” on September 17th at the Pacific Tower from 11:30am – 2pm.
We will be discussing the latest in smart technologies during an expert (and unbiased!) panel discussion focusing on the business case for smart building technologies. This will be a fantastic event and we hope to see you there!
After the event concludes, we will also be hosting a Tool Lending Library Open House along with AESP Evergreen Chapter, we hope you can join us for some drinks and apps!
The Tool Lending Library Open House is free to attend and we will hear from tool manufacturer, Fluke, to provide a demonstration on some of the tools we offer through the library, like our IR camera, as well as a brand new leak detecting tool for compressed air or other gasses. Find out about energy savings opportunities during this demonstration directly from the manufacturer!
You don’t want to miss this event on Sept 17th – register today!
At our next Why Smart Buildings event we are going to dive into the conversation around what smart building technologies have to offer to the commercial building world and how to create a compelling business case for investing in these technologies.
Join us for lunch and hear from unbiased experts in the industry that have real world experience in implementing smart technologies at the ‘Why Smart Buildings? Creating a Compelling Business Case” on September 17th at the Pacific Tower from 11:30am – 2pm.
