Professional Education Offerings at UW Integrated Design Lab

October 18, 2017 By SBC

Join the University of Washington Integrated Design Lab for in-depth educational opportunities focused on the tools and skills required to assess high performance design. Intended for participants who understand high performance concepts, this course provides technical training for practitioners to bring state-of-the-art quantitative analysis into design practice. The course complements the AIA Getting to Zero series, and will provide training using commonly available design tools such as EQuest, DIVA for Rhino, Revit, and custom Excel spreadsheets.

Register Now!

Sessions will be held at the Smart Buildings Center
in Seattle, WA from  8:30 AM-12:30 PM on the following dates:

1. Energy Modeling in the Design Process
Timeline and process for using energy modeling to achieve high performance design: Thursday, November 2
Understand how to fully realize high performance by examining the timeline and process for incorporating energy modeling in the design process. We will introduce the level of analytical detail that is required at each step of the design process in order to support data-driven decision-making.

2.Designing for the Perimeter Zone
Understanding loads and implications for architectural design: Thursday, November 16
Contextualize loads that are introduced through the building perimeter, and how modeling can help inform higher performance architectural design. Implications for light, air, heat transfer, passive and active systems, materials, as well as user behaviors will set the stage for best-practice envelope design.

3. Multifamily Residential Energy Efficiency
Forum discussion for understanding opportunities and barriers: Thursday, November 30
Implications for high performance multifamily residential will be explored through a forum discussion, raising awareness of the opportunities and barriers for energy and water efficiency in this prevalent building typology.

4. Quantifying Performance Beyond Energy
Tools for Water, Materials, and more: Thursday, December 14
Explore high performance building concepts beyond energy including water efficiency concepts, quantification, and implementation; materials selection aiming at environmentally and healthy choices; and other topics to be identified in partnership with series participants.

The total cost for the packaged Fall offerings is $350.
Please inquire for al a carte rates and offerings

Empowering Smart Buildings: Improving Productivity and Reducing Operating Costs

October 26th

730am – 930am

                                 Smart Buildings Center

This event serves as a kick off for the newly designated 501(c)3 organization, the Smart Buildings Center Education Program (SBC-EP). This non-profit is driven by an educational mission to inform stakeholders in the built environment of the productivity and cost benefits of deploying data driven smart building strategies.

Beginning with an informal light breakfast, attendees will be able to network and visit resource kiosks which feature items such as the real time energy performance dashboard (SkySpark) tracking building system performance of the Pacific Tower. Attendees will also see displays of building diagnostic tools available from the Tool Lending Library housed at the SBC. A smart screen board will be accessible that allows participants to view analysis visualizations of energy and performance data.

The formal program begins at 8:15am with a welcome address by Jim Baggs, Customer Service, Communications & Regulatory Affairs Officer of Seattle City Light. At 8:30am, the SBC Board of Directors will participate in a facilitated panel discussion that highlights smart building technologies and practices and how this region is taking a leadership position in bringing these ideas to market.

Industry Panel:

  • Perry England, VP Building Performance, MacDonald Miller
  • Dan McConnon, DCYF Project Director, WA Dept. of Commerce
  • Chris Roe, Energy Procurement Manager, Amazon
  • Cal Shirley, VP of Customer Solutions, Puget Sound Energy (retired)
  • Bert Von Hoof, Partner, GPM Azure IoT, Microsoft
  • Phil Welker, Executive Director, PECI

The event is FREE but space is limited, so RSVP now!

Upcoming Clean Energy Conference Tackles 3 Big Questions

October 10, 2017 By SBC

Nearly everyone agrees the Northwest should transition to the cleanest possible electric system.  But knowing what that system looks like and how to get there forces us to answer 3 difficult questions:

  • How can and should investor-owned utilities be motivated to pursue clean energy?
  • What should the role of natural gas be in our clean energy future?
  • How can we make the transition to a clean energy future equitable for frontline communities and for workers affected by the decline of fossil fuels?

Debating these and other vital questions will be leaders and experts from business, advocacy organizations, government . . . and, we hope, you as well.

It happens on November 2 in Seattle.  Register now for the Clean & Affordable Energy Conference and be part of the conversation the Northwest needs to have.

Then, join the Coalition in the evening for the fantastic Clean Energy Awards Gala, honoring exceptional leaders in advancing clean energy progress in the Northwest. You don’t want to miss this special event and opportunity to support the Coalition’s work!

Smart Buildings Center – Education Program Gets 501(c)3 Designation

September 13, 2017 By SBC

As most of you know, the Smart Buildings Center, a project of the Northwest Energy Efficiency Council, is a gathering spot for business and industry groups who share our passion for the built environment (if you haven’t seen it, visit).   The site also houses our free Tool Lending Library, a regional resource for lending building diagnostic tools like data loggers, IR cameras, flow measuring devices, and power meters to facility professionals in Washington and Oregon – for free.  In the next step to grow the programs and opportunities focused on smart and efficient building operations, a new non-profit was recently formed – the Smart Buildings Center Education Program (SBC-EP).  Recently, the SBC-EP was issued the IRS final determination letter granting it 501(c)3 status.  The new SBC-EP has an educational mission to increase awareness and understanding of smart building technologies and practices.  As a 501(c)3, SBC-EP will be able to solicit tax deductible contributions to support the development of this type of programming.  NEEC will continue to operate the facility (the box) and SBC-EP will help develop educational content (the stuff that goes into the box).  If you are interested in supporting the SBC-EP through a tax deductible donation, please contact [email protected] for more information.

The SBC-EP is governed by its own Board of Directors, but will work in close coordination with the NEEC Board.  The initial SBC-EP Board includes;

Ash Awad, McKinstry

Perry England, MacDonald-Miller Facility Solutions

Dan McConnon, State of Washington

Chris Roe, Amazon

Bert Von Hoof, Microsoft

Phil Welker, PECI

NEEC Names New Executive Director

September 13, 2017 By SBC

The following article was first published on www.neec.net.  The SBC is a project of NEEC.

The Northwest Energy Efficiency Council (NEEC) Board of Directors has selected Kerry Meade as their new Executive Director beginning October 1st.  After a national search for a dynamic and energetic leader, the NEEC Board selected Kerry to lead one of the region’s oldest and most influential energy efficiency non-profit trade associations.

“Kerry brings to NEEC both a deep knowledge of the energy efficiency industry as well as a keen sense of the enormous challenge and opportunity of transitioning the Northwest to a clean energy economy,” according to Janet Stephenson, NEEC Board President.  “We feel extremely lucky to get someone with her talents to lead the organization.”

Kerry will be managing a highly capable and experienced NEEC staff known for their high-quality programs and services.  NEEC will continue to implement its Smart Buildings Center project, dedicated to informing and educating the market on opportunities for smart and efficient building operations.

NEEC will continue its nationally recognized Building Operator Certification program which trains and credentials facility professionals in energy smart building operations and maintenance.

NEEC will also continue to advocate for the interests of the energy efficiency business community to ensure that regional policies and programs support adoption of efficient building technologies and practices.

Before joining NEEC, Kerry held senior positions at Seattle-based EMI Consulting and at CLEAResult, in Austin, Texas.  She is a graduate of Seattle University and Cornell University.  She can be reached at [email protected] and 206-292-5592.
