Cost-Effective Code Compliance: HVAC

The webinar will cover the HVAC provisions of the 2018 Seattle and Washington state energy codes for “commercial buildings,” highlighting requirements that are new to this year’s code and the differences between the Seattle and State codes. (“Commercial buildings” include multifamily buildings taller than 3 stories.) Discussion topics will include the Total System Performance Ratio (TSPR), data center standards, restrictions on fossil fuel and electric resistance heating, balanced ventilation, DOAS, energy recovery, HVAC system alterations, and more. Duane Jonlin, FAIA, will explain the code requirements, and special guest Ben Roush of FSI Engineers will demonstrate design options. Q&A time will follow.

Ongoing commissioning (OCx) has become an industry buzzword in recent years. Typically, OCx applies to new, high-performance buildings, in which a building automation system (BAS) collects and analyzes performance data to help fine-tune the building’s operation. However, such high-performance buildings make up a very small portion of the current building stock in the U.S.
In this course, we’ll demonstrate how many existing buildings can greatly benefit from a simpler form of OCx. We will cover the processes used, overall best practices, and the benefits of applying these concepts to a variety of buildings.

Position Summary
The Sustainable Building Science Technology (SBST) Bachelor of Applied Science program is looking for innovative and dedicated faculty members, who have a demonstrated commitment to working within a college community that is diverse and serves students from a broad spectrum of socioeconomic and academic backgrounds. Faculty will teach part-time in a range of construction / facility management courses at the college level. Smart Buildings Exchange Session Recordings Available!

Last week the first annual Smart Buildings Exchange (SBX) delivered a value-packed two days of conversations focused on today’s opportunities for technologies and practices that improve the intelligent operation of commercial and institutional buildings.

The conference kicked off with a moderated panel discussion featuring the chief executives of electric utilities joining experts from the Rocky Mountain Institute and Microsoft to discuss the quickly evolving world of carbon emissions, electric utilities and the customers they serve. Following the plenary session were sessions that ranged from grid-interactive efficient buildings (GEBs), to the role of artificial intelligence in building operations, to challenges in workforce skills development in a rapidly changing operations environment – and more.

Wondered How You’re Going to Meet New Codes Re: Heat Pump Water Heaters? City Light Is Bringing In the Experts
Central heat pump water heating systems are a game-changing technology that makes it possible to meet new electrification codes for commercial and multifamily buildings while improving energy efficiency and supporting demand response. Lighting Design Lab and Seattle City Light are announcing a new education series for engineers, building owners and operators, developers, architects, and policymakers that will cover the economic, energy, and environmental benefits of these systems, how they work, and key considerations for design, installation, and operation. This virtual, instructor-led course is developed and delivered by D+R International and Ecotope with the support of the Advanced Water Heating Initiative (AWHI), a national all-of-industry collaboration working to make heat pump technology universal in water heating applications.

Note: LDL is now an AIA Continuing Education Services Provider. All courses are available for 1 or 2 AIA LUs (See course description for actual credits).
