SBC welcomes voltage optimization company, Legend Power

September 10, 2019 By SBC

We’re Legend Power® Solutions Inc. and we’re really pleased to be up and running in the Smart Buildings Center! As we ramp up our presence in Seattle, we couldn’t think of more aligned organizations than NEEC and the SBC.  We now have a presence in the Tool Lending Library (you can now borrow our proprietary Voltage Loggers to easily measure real time voltage in your building) and you can check out our interactive map of the scope of overvoltage across Seattle on SBC’s Smart Board.

Legend manufactures the SmartGATE™; an innovative energy conservation and management platform for high-performance buildings.  We reduce your building’s energy usage by 3-5% and reduce the impact grid volatility has on your building.

After an initial meeting, a usual first step is to do a voltage profile of the building using our Voltage Logger, which you can borrow for free from SBC’s Tool Lending Library. It lets you see voltage. It simply plugs into a wall socket and records detailed voltage levels in the building. We recommend approximately 2 weeks of data. We download the data from the on-board SD card, from which we then provide the voltage profile for the period.

Curious about your building? Or a client’s building? Check for yourself if your building is over or under voltage, and what you could potentially be saving on energy. SmartGATE™ also improves your building’s resiliency by minimizing downtime due to voltage issues. We combined voltage readings from around town with publicly available Seattle City Light data to create our interactive map of overvoltage, and projected usage and savings. Check it out here: https://legendpower.com/markets/#Seattle, or at the Smart Buildings Center.

We don’t know your issues yet, so we don’t know if SmartGATE™ is a solution for you. But we do know that with almost 300 installed, 74% of our customers have purchased between 2 and 18 systems. They install SmartGATE™, it works, and they install more. We couldn’t put it better than our customer Spencer Wood, Director of Facilities Management at Humber College:

“It’s not like when you change a light… you just save on the light.  You change this… you save on everything!”

Fall is Boiler Tune-Up Time

September 21, 2017 By SBC

Leaves are changing color, evenings are getting cooler and fall is just around the corner. As we enter the building heating season, now is a good time to “tune-up” your fuel fired boilers to ensure they are operating at peak efficiency this winter. A boiler tune-up is the process of measuring the combustion efficiency of the boiler and if required, adjusting the fuel/air ratio to optimize efficiency. The instrument used to measure combustion efficiency is called a Combustion Analyzer. This diagnostic tool measures the chemical composition of the flue gases and calculates combustion efficiency based on the fuel type and the entering and leaving combustion air temperatures. Combustion efficiency readings are compared to manufacturer specifications and adjustments are made to the fuel/air ratio as required. It is important to measure combustion efficiency across the entire range of boiler operation. For example, if a boiler is over-sized and rarely operates at peak capacity then you would want to optimize combustion efficiency at part-load firing conditions. In addition to the boiler tune up, Fall is also a great time to complete your boiler preventative maintenance tasks before we get into the full heating season.

BACHARACH PCA3 PORTABLE COMBUSTION ANALYZER

The Bacharach PCA3 is a commercial grade hand-held combustion and emmissions analyzer designed for on-dedmand sampling of light industrial, institutional commercial, and residential furnaces, appliances, and boilers. The PCA3 can measure up to four gasses simultaneously so it is the perfect tool for building operators, boiler contractors and service technicians who need to determine combustion efficiency, excess air, stack gas O2 and CO levels, stack temperature, draft, and differential pressure. Combustion efficiency calculations can be conducted for a variety of fuel types.

Advanced data storage and communication features allow the operator to store up to 500 individual combustion test records which can later be recalled for viewing, printing, or download to a personal computer. The AC power adapter allows the analyzer to run for extended periods of time while data logging.

Over 85 different types of building diagnostic tools and meters are available for loan from the Tool Lending Library at the Smart Buildings Center located in Seattle, Washington. For more information visit our website at www.smartbuildingscenter.org

Power Meters and Energy Logging

June 21, 2017 By SBC

Measuring electric power consumption of mechanical and lighting equipment is a useful method to establish energy consumption, verify energy savings from a project, or determine the electric load on distribution panels and transformers in commercial buildings. The Tool Lending Library at the Smart Buildings Center in Seattle, Washington has portable power meters from Fluke and Dent Instruments that are simple to use and provide a wealth of data for electric energy consumption and load studies.  These instruments are available for loan free of charge to building owners, electrical contractors, and energy service providers in Washington and Oregon.

FLUKE 1730 Energy Logger

The Fluke 1730 Energy Logger provides a simple method to measure and log energy use of single and three phase electrical equipment and systems. The integral color display provides a convenient method to perform in-the-field analysis and data checks.  The logger can be powered by an integral battery pack for short term studies up to 4 hours. For longer term studies, the logger can be powered directly by the measured circuit.  More than 20 separate logging sessions can be stored on the instrument. All measured values are automatically logged and can be reviewed during logging and before downloading for on-the-go analysis.

The Fluke 1730 Energy Logger includes flat cables for reference voltage and 10-inch flexible rocoil type current transducers rated at a maximum of 1500 amps up to 600 volts. The logger includes a USB port for downloading the energy data for analysis using the Fluke Energy Analyze software. The data can also be exported for use in spreadsheet programs for further analysis.

DENT INSTRUMENTS ELITEPRO XC

The Dent Instruments ELITEpro XC is a complete solution for pinpointing electrical usage and quantifying energy usage. It is capable of measuring, storing, and analyzing electrical consumption data which is derived from the voltage and current inputs. These meters can capture kWh/kW energy and demand data as well as virtually all relevant energy parameters for diagnostics and monitoring on three-phase and single-phase circuits. The meter’s fast sampling rate allows for real-time display of voltage, current waveforms and harmonics.

The portable meter measures up to four channels of energy metrics with currents ranging from 0-6,000 amps. The meter also has the capability of recording analog data with a configurable input range for voltage (0-10 VDC) or current transducers (0-20 or 4-20 Ma). These analog inputs are used for process or environmental correlation studies with power.

The meter is easily configured using ELOG software. A Setup Table is the file that programs the logger for the project. When the Setup File is sent to the logger the meter is ready for deployment. The meter is powered directly from the phases of the service being measured. Measurements are stored in on-board memory which allows for long term logging sessions. The Tool Lending Library has a wide range of current transducers (CT’s) for use with the ELITEpro XC. These include 25 and 50-amp split core, 150-amp clamp-on, and 16” to 36” rocoils rated at 5-5000 Amps. At the end of the project you connect the meter to a computer with ELOG software and download the data file. Analyze the data and create graphs with ELOG or export the data file for use in spreadsheet programs.
